Earlier today, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, causing widespread destruction and panic. The earthquake’s epicenter was near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city with a population of about 1.5 million. A significant aftershock of 6.4 magnitude followed shortly after.
The tremors were felt as far as Bangkok, Thailand, causing buildings to sway and led to the collapse of a 30-story skyscraper under construction in the Chatuchak district. This tragic incident resulted in at least two deaths and trapped 43 workers. Rescue operations are ongoing to locate and assist those still missing.
In Myanmar, the earthquake caused severe damage to infrastructure, including the collapse of a 90-year-old bridge in the Sagaing region and significant harm to historic structures in Mandalay. The full extent of casualties and damage is still being assessed as rescue teams work tirelessly to reach affected areas.
Let us extend our heartfelt prayers and thoughts of ‘mettā-karunā’ to all affected by this devastating earthquake. May the injured receive prompt and adequate medical care, and may the families who have lost loved ones find strength and solace during this difficult time. We also pray for those who have perished in this tragedy – may they rest in Peace.
