Education is ‘an enlightening experience’

On 11 December 2016, Nalandians observed Nalanda ‘Education Day’, which marked the anniversary of the launching of our “Education Philosophy”.  In conjunction with this important occasion, the Director of Nalanda Institute Achariya Tan Siang Chye gave a Dhamma talk expounding the purpose and importance of Buddhist education, highlighting its pivotal role in modern times.

Ajahn Chah memorial today

Today marks the 25th anniversary of Ajahn Chah’s passing.  Thousands of his disciples and students returned to Wat Pah Pong in Ubon Ratchathani to observe the occasion with meditation, Dhamma teaching, and merit making.  Among the senior disciples present were Luang Phor Liem, successor to Ajahn Chah as Abbot of Wat Pah Pong, and Luang Phor Sumedho, Ajahn Chah’s senior-most Western disciple and the first Abbot of Wat Pah Nanachat.

25th anniversary of Ajahn Chah’s passing

16 January 2017 marks the 25th anniversary of Ajahn Chah’s passing.  Venerable Ajahn was one of the most revered and influential Buddhist teachers in the modern era.  He was a doyen of the “forest tradition” who attracted many Thai and foreign practitioners to be ordained under him.

Paris remembered

A year ago tomorrow – on 13 November 2015 – a group of “Islamic State” (“IS”) terrorists launched a series of coordinated attacks across Paris and Saint-Denis, killing 130 people and injuring hundreds more.  The loss of innocent lives is still a very painful memory for France, and especially so for the victims’ families.  We stand in solidarity with French citizens in commemorating this tragic event – another dark day in the annals of humanity.  May the deceased rest in Peace; and may all beings be free from suffering.

First anniversary of Wisdom Park Committee

On Sunday 16 October, the Wisdom Park Development Committee (WPDC) celebrated its first anniversary of establishment and operation.  WPDC was formed in October 2015 with initially 13 members, and was tasked with preparing the ‘Master Development Plan’ for Wisdom Park – the proposed education hub for the Malaysian Buddhist community.  3 more members were later invited to join WPDC to strengthen the team.

UPM Buddhist Society marks 50th anniversary

On Saturday 1 October, the UPM Buddhist Society (PBUPM) celebrated its 50th anniversary with an appreciation dinner in Shah Alam attended by its members, past and present.  The society was established in 1966 by staff members of then College of Agriculture Malaya, which was upgraded in 1973 to University of Agriculture Malaysia (in Malay, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia or UPM). In 1998, its name changed again to Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Tribute to two eminent teachers

Today is the third anniversary of the passing of eminent Pāli Scholar, Venerable Kakkapalliye Anuruddha Nayaka Thero, and renowned meditation teacher, Acharya Satya Narayan Goenka.  Nalandians held a simple tribute to both teachers last night after our weekly meditation session.

The enduring legacy of the late Venerable K. Sri Dhammananda

Tomorrow marks the 10th anniversary of Venerable Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda’s passing (on 31 August 2006). Although he had physically left us a decade ago, Ven. Dhammananda had nonetheless left behind an enduring legacy of Buddhist educational and missionary spirit among his followers in Malaysia.

Cherished memories of four friends

Today we commemorate the 7th death anniversary of Sis. G.G. Tan, Sis. Julie Ang, Sis. Jennie Cheong, and Sis. Lee Ah Yem.  The four Dhamma friends passed away in an accident while traversing through Ladakh, India on a visit to perform charitable work there.
