Obituary – Ven. Dr. T. Sangharatana

It is with deep respect and a heavy heart that we announce the passing away of Venerable T. Sangharatana Nāyaka Thero earlier today, 17 March 2018.  He was well regarded for his social service in Bangalore, India, as the founding member of the Maha Mahinda Dhammaduta Propagating Society, which serves the socio-welfare needs of the lower strata of Indian people.

Tragic air-crash in Kathmandu

Just days after the 4th anniversary of MH370’s disappearance, another tragic air-crash happened this afternoon in Nepal when a turboprop passenger aircraft was attempting to land at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport.  Flight BS 211 belonging to US-Bangla Airlines was flying on a scheduled flight from the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka to Kathmandu with 71 people on board.

Earthquake hits Hualien, Taiwan

A deadly magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the eastern Taiwanese city of Hualien close to midnight yesterday (6 February), causing buildings to collapse with people trapped within them.  So far, two people were confirmed dead, more than 200 injured, and some others missing.

Obituary – Ven. Professor Bellanwila Wimalaratana

It is with deep respect and a heavy heart that we announce the passing away of Venerable Professor Bellanwila Sri Wimalaratana Nayaka Thero on 3 February 2018, aged 77.  Ven. Wimalaratana died of injuries sustained in a fall at Bellanwila Raja Mahavihara, where he was the deputy abbot.

Deadly earthquake struck Iran-Iraq

A powerful earthquake shook the border region in Kermanshah Province of Iran and Iraq’s Kurdish region on Sunday 12 November, causing at least 500 deaths and more than 8,000 injuries.  The earthquake was measured at 7.3 on the Richter Scale, and is the deadliest so far in 2017.

Obituary – Farewell Aunty Tan

It is with deep respects that we announce the passing of a distinguished member of the Malaysian Buddhist community, Mdm. Chin Kim Lan, or better known to us as ‘Aunty Tan’, on Saturday 28 October 2017 in Kuala Lumpur.  Her funeral will be held on Wednesday 1 November, at 1.00pm.  Aunty Tan is the beloved mother of Nalanda Institute Director, Achariya Tan Siang Chye.

Final farewell to a beloved monarch

The Royal Cremation ceremony for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand will take place on 26 October.  We join people across the world in bidding him final farewell.  Though he had passed on, King Bhumibol’s legacy endures in the thousands of royal projects he initiated in his seven decades on the throne.  His memory will no doubt live on in the hearts and minds of millions of Thais.

Tribute to Tuanku Abdul Halim

Nalanda Buddhist Society Malaysia offers our deepest condolence to the royal family and people of Kedah over the demise of Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, the beloved Sultan of Kedah Darul Aman.  His Royal Highness passed away at 2.30pm today, aged 89.
