Nalanda Patron’s Day

18 March 2013 marks the 95th birth anniversary of Nalanda’s late Spiritual Advisor, the Most Venerable Kirinde Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Thero. This day is also Nalanda Patron’s Day, an annual event to commemorate and appreciate all our donors, benefactors and volunteers who have contributed tremendously to the growth of Nalanda over the years.

Sunday, 17 March was Nalanda Patron’s Day Observance.  We were privileged to commemorate this day with our friends from Singapore Buddhist Fellowship.  Together, we listened to and discussed the Dhamma with Mr. Benny Liow, as he spoke on the topic of 'Morality' (Sila).

Robes Offering Ceremony

According to Buddhist tradition, the period from July to October every year is when Buddhist monastics observe the “Vassa” or ‘rains retreat’.  In ancient times, the Indian monsoon season prevented Buddhist monks and nuns from wandering.  Thus, the Buddha instructed His disciples to temporarily settle in a monastery for three months, and to apply themselves strictly to their spiritual practice.

National Maha Sanghikadana at Bodhi Park

7 & 8 July 2012 It was a truly grand sight at the National Maha Sanghikadana this weekend as the Malaysian Buddhist community came together to support the meaningful event.  Offering alms and participating in the Maha Sanghikadana strengthens the harmonious ties between the Sangha and lay devotees.  This is vital for the development of Buddhism in Malaysia.  Sadhu anumodana to all who donated, volunteered and participated in this auspicious occasion!

Joyful Pindacāra (Alms round)

"If a person acts or speaks with a pure mind, happiness follows him like his shadow"  Dhammapada Verse 2 Embarking on a wholesome journey, about 30 Nalandians and volunteers gathered at NEO @ Happy Garden on Saturday morning to participate in the first pindacara at the Taman O.U.G. morning market.  With high spirits and good morale, everyone was united in their aspiration to spread happiness and peace with the performance of dana (offering).  Entering the market, the public were educated on the meaning and significance of giving alms.  Food was offered to the Venerables with faith and goodwill.  What a joyful occasion indeed!

Dhammaduta Tour in Malaysia

Nalanda is privileged to host Ven. Yogavacara Rahula, a senior Theravadan monk from the USA, during his Dhammaduta Tour in Malaysia this month.  Ven. Rahula was born in California in 1948.  Venerable first ordained as a Buddhist novice monk in 1975 in Sri Lanka, then undertook the Upasampadā ordination in 1979.  Venerable resided at the Bhavana Society Forest Monastery in West Virginia, USA for 24 years until 2010, and now travels around the world on a teaching tour. Venerable is giving meditation guidance and Dhamma talks to the Malaysian Buddhist community in June 2012.  Everyone is welcome!
