A respectful way of life

On Sunday 10 March, Nalanda was honoured to host Venerable N. Jinananda, the President of Buddhist Monks’ Council of Canada for a Dhamma talk.  Venerable shared that the teachings of the Buddha is based on respect for oneself and others.  After His Enlightenment, the Buddha gazed at the Bodhi tree out of gratitude, a teaching to us to bear respectful mindsets even for inanimate objects.

Cultivating a respectful attitude

On 3 March, Bro. Benny Liow gave a Dhamma talk on ‘Cultivating Respect’ at Nalanda Centre.  In Latin, re spectum means ‘to look more carefully’.  Thus, to respect someone is to know them better, to look at their good qualities, and where appropriate, to honour those qualities.  The Buddha said that the ability to give respect is in itself a great blessing.

On Friday 14 December 2018, Nalandians were honoured to welcome Ajahn Kalyano back to Nalanda Centre for a Dhamma talk.  Ajahn’s last visit to Nalanda was in 2016 and has been a strong supporter of Nalanda’s education mission.

Dhamma talk by Ajahn Achalo

On 2 December 2018, Nalanda was honoured to host Venerable Ajahn Achalo for a Dhamma talk on his first visit to Nalanda Centre. Ajahn Achalo reminded us that in our samsaric existence, we are affected by ignorance – the cause of all suffering.  This ignorance of ‘not knowing the true nature of the way things are’ results in us perceiving things incorrectly and culminates in craving and anger.  The remedy to ‘not knowing’ is simply ‘to know’; achieved through cultivating wisdom and concentration.

Meditation session with Dhamma talk

Join us this Wednesday for an evening of peaceful group meditation, followed by a Dhamma talk by Venerable Dr. S. Pemaratana.  He is the Abbot of Pittsburgh Buddhist Centre.  He offers public workshops on meditation and provides spiritual counselling to help people deal with challenges in life.

Volunteer Appreciation Day

Nalanda Buddhist Society would like to thank all volunteers, donors, and devotees who contributed to the successful and inspiring 4-day celebration of Wesak ‘Buddha Day’ earlier this week.  Traditionally, the Sunday after ‘Buddha Day’ is dedicated to appreciating the spirit of selfless voluntary service.  Hence, we invite all volunteers of the ‘Buddha Day’ celebration to join us this Sunday for the morning service, followed by blessings and appreciation luncheon.

Ven. Dhammavuddho in Johor Bahru

NEO Centre Johor Bahru is honoured to host Venerable Dhammavuddho Mahathera this Thursday, 10 May for a Dhamma talk, starting at 8.00pm.  Ven. Dhammavuddho is the founder-abbot of Vihara Buddha Gotama, a forest monastery in Perak founded mainly for the study, teaching, practice and propagation of the Buddha’s discourses, monastic discipline, and meditation.
