Qualities for a noble life

On 29 September, Bro. Tan Siang Chye delivered a Dhamma talk on humility and modesty.  Modesty is the outward sign of a truly humble person, who lives a simple life, without the need for status or the urge to be higher than others.  Pride, conceit and arrogance are the opposites of these qualities.  These unwholesome traits trap people in prisons of their own creation, and prevent them from progressing on the Noble Eightfold Path.

Bearing gratitude on Memorial day

31 August 2019 marked the 13th Anniversary of the late Ven. Dr. Kirinde Sri Dhammananda’s passing.  Nalanda members and devotees honoured our late Spiritual Adviser with a commemoration ceremony in the morning.  After the meditation, puja and chanting, Achariya Vijaya Samarawickrama delivered a Dhamma talk on the benefits of gratitude and appreciation.

Peaceful meditation retreat

On Wednesday 19 June, twenty-five meditators checked in at K. Sri Dhammananda Centre to attend a meditation retreat conducted by Venerable Gavesi.  After receiving clear instructions from Venerable on how to start, participants commenced their practice, alternating between sitting and walking meditation to hone their mindfulness for the next 5 days.

Dhamma talk by Ven. Dr. Pemaratana

On Wednesday 12 June, Ven. Dr. S. Pemaratana, Abbot of Pittsburgh Buddhist Centre, U.S.A., delivered a Dhamma talk on how to cultivate mental well-being.  In the talk, he shared five skilful techniques taught by the Buddha to remove unwholesome thoughts: (1) replace them with wholesome thoughts; (2) reflect on the consequences of being unwholesome; (3) disregard the unwholesome thoughts; (4) to contemplate causes and conditions; and (5) to crush the unwholesome thoughts with our will.

On Wednesday 22 May, Nalanda Centre was honoured to host Ven. Alokavamsa from Indonesia for a Dhamma talk during his transit in Kuala Lumpur.  Venerable talked about the pursuit of two types of happiness – “delusional happiness” and “real happiness”.

Dhamma talks by Venerable Gavesi

Nalanda is hosting a 5-day non-residential Meditation Retreat guided by Venerable Gavesi from 19 to 23 June.  We look forward to welcoming all meditators registered for the retreat to K. Sri Dhammananda Centre this Wednesday.  Participants are reminded to bring along a shawl or jacket as the retreat will be held in an air-conditioned hall.  We also encourage you to bring a notebook, stationery, water bottle and thermal flask for your use during the retreat.
