3rd Anniversary of MH370

Today marks the third anniversary of Malaysia Airlines MH370′s mysterious disappearance.  Even after intensive searching, the aircraft has not been located.  Thus, many questions remain unanswered as to the fate of that flight, and its 239 passengers and crew.

On Tuesday 13 December, Nalanda Centre welcomed the visit by Venerable Ajahn Kalyāno, a disciple of the late Ajahn Chah, a celebrated teacher in the Thai forest tradition.  Ajahn Kalyāno is the abbot of Buddha Bodhivana Monastery in Melbourne, Australia.

Dhamma talk by Ven. Ñanukkamsa

At the weekly Wednesday meditation on 21 December, Nalandians lent ear to an enlightening Dhamma talk by Ven. Ñanukkamsa on the purpose of becoming a Buddhist.  In the Mahā Sāropama Sutta, the Buddha expounded that the purpose of holy life does not have gain or fame or even the accomplishments of virtue, concentration, or knowledge as its end goal.  Instead, its ultimate goal is to attain the unshakeable liberation of the mind.

On 11 December 2016, Nalandians observed Nalanda ‘Education Day’, which marked the anniversary of the launching of our “Education Philosophy”.  In conjunction with this important occasion, the Director of Nalanda Institute Achariya Tan Siang Chye gave a Dhamma talk expounding the purpose and importance of Buddhist education, highlighting its pivotal role in modern times.

Giving is actually a great gain

On Sunday 13 November, Sis. Buddhinī Tan was invited to give a Dhamma sharing about the meaning behind the offering of robes and requisites.  She first explained that devotees make offerings as an expression of strong faith and gratitude to the Three Jewels, thinking of the Buddha as their exemplary teacher, the Dhamma as their guiding principle, and the Sangha as advisors for spiritual cultivation.

Beyond victory and defeat

After the weekly meditation session on Wednesday 9 November, Bro. Tan gave a Dhamma teaching addressing the unexpected and somewhat ‘shocking’ results of the 2016 U.S. Presidential Elections.  Bro. Tan said that ‘failure’ is one thing, but ‘defeat’ is another. The truth of the matter is that ‘failure’ and ‘success’ are just part of a process that we can learn from.
