Giving is actually a great gain

On Sunday 13 November, Sis. Buddhinī Tan was invited to give a Dhamma sharing about the meaning behind the offering of robes and requisites.  She first explained that devotees make offerings as an expression of strong faith and gratitude to the Three Jewels, thinking of the Buddha as their exemplary teacher, the Dhamma as their guiding principle, and the Sangha as advisors for spiritual cultivation.

Beyond victory and defeat

After the weekly meditation session on Wednesday 9 November, Bro. Tan gave a Dhamma teaching addressing the unexpected and somewhat ‘shocking’ results of the 2016 U.S. Presidential Elections.  Bro. Tan said that ‘failure’ is one thing, but ‘defeat’ is another. The truth of the matter is that ‘failure’ and ‘success’ are just part of a process that we can learn from.

Talk on Dhamma, science, and reality

On Sunday 6 November, Director of Nalanda Institute Achariya Tan Siang Chye gave a talk on the Buddhist view on ‘Science and Faith’.  He first addressed the dichotomy between those who ‘understand the world through science’, and those who ‘understand’ it through religion.  Many followers of theistic religions tend to merely believe in what their religious books say.  On the other hand, with so-called empiricism, many people observe something ‘scientifically’ and choose to accept that as the truth.

Uposatha Service with Sis. Sunandā

After the full-moon Uposatha Pūja and meditation on Saturday 15 October, devotees were delighted to listen to a Dhamma sharing by Sis. Sunandā.  She spoke about the chronicles of Queen Mallikā, one of the great lay women disciples of the Buddha.

Dhamma talk by Āyasmā Aggacitta

On Saturday 26 November, Nalanda Centre was honoured to host Āyasmā Aggacitta, who gave a Dhamma teaching on mindfulness in everyday life.  The evening began with meditation guided by Ven. Aggacitta, who is the Abbot of Sasanārakkha Buddhist Sanctuary in Taiping, Perak.  He taught that awareness and mindfulness should not only be practised during ‘formal’ meditation sittings, but at every moment throughout the day.

Living in harmony with all beings

In conjunction with Nalanda’s monthly ‘Sāmaggī Day’ on 23 October, Dato’ Charlie Chia gave a Dhamma teaching on how to live in true harmony.  He spoke about the six conditions of congeniality in reference to the Māhaparinibbāna Sutta and Dhammapada Commentary.

Dhamma sharing in Sungai Petani

On Saturday 19 November, the Director of Pustaka Nalanda Bro. Ananda Fong gave a talk at NEO Centre Sungai Petani on the relevance of Buddhism in the 21st century.  He shared many recent scientific researches that support what the Buddha taught 2600 years ago, and proved the teachings relevant at present times.
