Ajahn Buddhadasa Commemoration Programme – Meditation & Dhamma Talk

On Wednesday, 4 September 2013, Pustaka Nalanda invited Bro. H S Tan to conduct a special meditation session and deliver a Dhamma Talk as part of the on-going Ajahn Buddhadasa Commemoration Programme.  Quoting several discourses from the Anguttara Nikaya, Bro. Tan spoke about the qualities of an 'elder in the Dhamma'.  One is reckoned an 'elder in the Dhamma' not by seniority in years; rather it is by the degree of virtue, true understanding of the teachings, meditative attainments, and penetrative wisdom.

Another fruitful visit to Johor Bahru

It was another packed weekend at NEO Centre as Bro.Tan came on his monthly visit to Johor Bahru.  He gave a Dhamma teaching in English on Saturday 24 August, in memory of Sis. GG Tan, Julie Ang, Lee Ah Yem, and Jennie Cheong who passed away in an accident 4 years ago while on a visit to India.  Bro. Tan gave another uplifting talk in Mandarin on Sunday 25 August, in honour of Nalanda's late Spiritual Advisor Ven. Dr. K Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Thero.

Uposatha Puja & Talk at NEO Centre Johor Bahru

On Monday 8 July, Bro. Tan led the New-moon Uposatha Day Puja at NEO Centre Johor Bahru. After which, Bro.Tan gave an uplifing talk on the purpose of spiritual cultivation, which is to develop the ability to view things from a 'Dhamma prism' and hence obtain Right Views. The talk was very well-attended, which saw a packed Shrine-Hall. Attendees included a group of devotees from Metta Lodge led by Dr. Wong Yin Onn, and Singaporean devotees from the Buddhist Fellowship.

Five Daily Reflections

On 30 June, Bro. Benny Liow, Editor of YBAM’s Buddhist journal – the “Eastern Horizon”, gave a Dhamma talk on the “Five Daily Reflections”.  Bro. Benny quoted from the Upajjhatthana Sutta (AN 5.57) on the five facts of life that should often be reflected upon.

Wesak Observance at Nalanda Johor Bahru

Wesak full-moon Buddha Day was celebrated for the first time at NEO Centre Johor Bahru on Saturday, 25 May.  More than 200 devotees packed the Centre to attend the pūja and Dhamma sharing by Nalandians.

Installation of Buddharupam & inaugural Uposatha pūja

10 May was a pivotal milestone for NEO Centre Johor Bahru.  After 2 months of renovation, the Centre was finally ready to host its Buddharupam in the Shrine Hall.  Members and devotees of Nalanda JB respectfully welcomed the Buddharupam to the Centre in a simple yet meaningful ceremony led by Bro. Tan.  It was also the New-moon Uposatha Day marking the start of Vesakha (Wesak) month.  Hence, the installation of the Buddharupam on that day was most timely and appropriate.

Nalanda is honoured by the visit of Luang Por Dumrong, Luang Por Jundee and Tan Ajahn Moshe on 30 March. The venerables are from the Thai Forest tradition and disciples from the late Ajahn Chah lineage.

Visit by Singapore Buddhist Fellowship (BF)

The Buddha image sits on a high platform in the middle of the Shrine hall, greeting all visitors to Nalanda with perfect equanimity and compassion. On 16 March, members of Singapore Buddhist Fellowship (BF) arrived at Nalanda Centre to a warm welcome and hearty lunch. They were then guided on a tour of the building before proceeding to a “Meet-the-Author” session with Mr. Vijaya Samarawickrama.

Ajahn Tiradhammo at Nalanda Centre

Ajahn Tiradhammo from Canada visited Nalanda Centre and delivered an insightful Dhamma talk this evening.  Venerable Ajahn is a senior monk in Ajahn Chah’s Thai forest monk tradition.  On arrival at 6.15pm, Ajahn was received by a group of Nalandian officers and volunteers.  He later had a conversation with Bro.Tan, before being taken on a tour of Nalanda Centre by Sis. Nandini and Bro. Andrew Lee.  Anumodana!
