On Sunday 2 July, over 80 devotees and volunteers gathered at Nalanda Centre on Dhamma Day, the Asalha full-moon to commemorate the Buddha’s teaching of His first discourse to the five ascetics over 26 centuries ago. The congregation’s recitation of the inspiring ‘Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta’ led by Bro. Lim Ajit, was charged with faith and gratitude for our Fully Enlightened Teacher.

His deep interest in Buddhism brought him to Thailand after completing his studies at Bristol University. Ajahn Kalyano received ordination in the forest tradition of Ajahn Chah in 1985 and trained for many years under Ajahn Anan. In 2000, Ajahn Kalyano was invited to establish the forest tradition in Australia where he is now the Abbot of Buddha Bodhivana Monastery in East Warburton, Victoria.

Luang Por was accompanied by Luang Por Sawang Kalyāno, Luang Por Charlie Piyadhammo, Ajahn Dton Dhirapanno and Ajahn Meng Techadhammo, who are on a Dhamma tour across Malaysia and Singapore. The Dhamma talk was delivered by Luang Por Lai in Thai, and translated into English by Ajahn Dton.

In his Dhamma talk on the importance and benefits of keeping the Five Precepts, Ven. Rahula said that the Buddha taught us how to attain happiness which is independent and comes from within. However, without the right training, much of our happiness is dependent on our senses. This kind of happiness is unstable and fleeting.

Luang Por Lai was ordained as a ‘samanera’ at Wat Nong Pah Pong with Luang Por Chah as his preceptor in 1979. He received full ordination in 1980 at Wat Pa Wiwek and is currently residing at Wat Pa Khantidham in the Lamphun Province. Accompanying Luang Por Lai is Luang Por Sawang, Luang Por Charlie, Ajahn Dton and Ajahn Meng, venerable monks of the Ajahn Chah lineage in the Thai Forest Tradition. All are welcome.
