‘Dhammacakka Day’ Observance

On Sunday 17 July, Nalandians observed ‘Dhammacakka Day’ to commemorate the turning of the ‘Wheel of Dhamma’ 2600 years ago, when the Buddha expounded the ‘Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta’ to his first five disciples at Isipatana near Benares.

Teaching by Sayadaw Nyanapurnik

On Wednesday 22 June, Nalanda Centre was very honoured to host senior Nepalese prelate Sayadaw Nyanapurnik Nāyaka Thera to deliver a Dhamma talk. Sayadaw Nyanapurnik is also a Pāli scholar and Vipassana teacher who has been actively developing Theravada Buddhism in Nepal over four decades. Sayadawgyi was accompanied to Nalanda Centre by Malaysian bhikkhu Venerable Gavesi and two Nepali sayalays.

Ven. Dhammavuddho’s talk at Nalanda

On Sunday 19 June, Nalanda was honoured by the presence of Venerable Dhammavuddho Māhathera, founder and abbot of Vihāra Buddha Gotama in Temoh, Perak, to give a talk on the ‘Qualities of a Wise man’. His talk coincided with the third week of Nalanda’s Gimhāna Retreat, and thus it was an inspiring sight to see the Dhamma Hall packed with devotees who came to listen to the venerable in person.

Tomorrow*, we will be observing ‘Dhammacakka Day’ at Nalanda Centre.  There will be the customary offerings, meditation, and recitation of the celebrated “Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta” – the Buddha’s inaugural discourse after Enlightenment on the Four Noble Truths.

Asalha ‘Dhamma Day’ Programme

The full-moon day of Asalha month in July marks the occasion when the Buddha first preached the Dhamma to His initial few disciples.  In one of the most enlightening teachings ever, the Buddha taught them the truths of life – ‘Dukkha’ (suffering); its causes; its cessation; and the Path to its cessation – henceforth termed the ‘Four Noble Truths’.  At Nalanda, Asalha full-moon is celebrated as ‘Dhamma Day’, which is another important spiritual occasion after the Wesak full-moon ‘Buddha Day’ in May.

A joyful and inspirational youth camp

For 4 days from 4th to 7th July, Chin Swee Caves Temple in Genting Highlands was rumbling with youthful energy as 230 young adults gathered there to attend the spirited and inspiring Dhamma-Living Camp 3. Throughout the camp, there were insightful teachings by Nalanda founder Bro. Tan on what is the ‘true potential’ of human existence. The discussions and activities galvanized participants on a journey of self-discovery for greater happiness, peace, wisdom, and liberation from ‘Dukkha’.

Reducing the effects of past kamma

On Saturday 11 June, Nalanda Centre hosted a one-day sutta study and meditation workshop facilitated by Āyasmā Aggacitta, with the subject “How to diminish the effects of past kamma”.  Āyasmā Aggacitta shared on what the Pāli suttas actually said about the matter.  The aim of the workshop was to help participants practise effectively to end suffering.

Associate with the Wise

On Sunday, 12 June, Bro. Tan gave a Dhamma talk which re-energised our spiritual learning and practice, after the busy Wesak Buddha Day period.  He reminded us that we needed to grow with wisdom after years of learning the Dhamma.  Wisdom helps us to be more humane, kind and considerate.

Living a ‘Life of Wisdom’

On Buddha Day 21 May, Nalanda founder Bro. H. S. Tan conducted a 2-hour Sutta Study session based on the theme of the Wesak celebrations – ‘A Life of Wisdom‘.  Despite it being a very long day with many other on-going Wesak activities, the mid-afternoon session attracted a large attendance of more than 160 people, with some devotees even traveling from other states to Nalanda Centre.
