Youths attend meditation retreat

Nalanda Youth Centre started the New Year with a one-day meditation retreat on 9 January. 126 youths from Malaysia and overseas gathered for the retreat which was guided by Nalanda founder, Bro Tan.  The participants benefited from the spiritually uplifting event and agreed that it was a great way to start the New Year!

Ven. Gunaratana arrives at Sri Serdang

Nalandians were overjoyed to receive Ven. Sri Pandita Henepola Gunaratana Nāyaka Māha Thero when he arrived at Nalanda Centre Sri Serdang at 7.45pm yesterday evening.  Earlier, venerable had left NEO Centre Johor Bahru after staying there on Friday, 8 January.

Nalanda Centre to host Ven. H. Gunaratana

We are very pleased to welcome Venerable Sri Pandita Henepola Gunaratana Nāyaka Māha Thero to Malaysia!  Ven. Gunaratana (fondly known as ‘Bhante G’ to many of his students) is a renowned Buddhist meditation teacher and the author of several influential works, such as the best-selling ‘Mindfulness in Plain English’.  He is held in high esteem in the Buddhist world as a scholar and practitioner.

Firefly Mission visits Nalanda

On 10 November, Nalandians were delighted to welcome 38 members of the Firefly Mission Singapore, led by its President, Dr. Ng Yee Kong.  They were returning from their annual trip to Sasanarakkha Buddhist Sanctuary in Taiping for the ‘Kathina’ celebrations.  They had picked an auspicious day to visit as it was also Deepavali.

Dhamma Retreat in Kedah

On Saturday 31 October, Bro. Tan conducted a Dhamma Learning retreat at Gurun Buddhist Association, organised by the Nalanda Sungai Petani Branch.  In the one-day retreat attended by 72 participants, Bro. Tan gave insightful teachings about Citta (the mind) and Dhamma (the Way).  Bro.Tan said that when we understand Citta, we will understand how we operate as human beings.  Then, knowing the Dhamma will prevent us from doing wrong and motivate us to do what is right.

Nalandians observe ‘Samaggi Day’

On Sunday 30 August, Nalandians in their white shirt and sarong attire, came together at Nalanda Centre for ‘Samaggi Day’, which falls on the last Sunday of every month.  “Samaggi”, which means unity and harmony, is a Pāli word and an important Buddhist principle.

K. Sri Dhammananda Memorial Day

On Monday 31 August, despite it being the National day public holiday, many Nalandians and devotees congregated at Sri Serdang to commemorate the 9th anniversary of our late Spiritual Advisor, Venerable Dr. Kirinde Sri Dhammananda’s passing.  As the day also marked our country’s Independence Day, the National Anthem ‘Negaraku’ was sung in a flag-raising ceremony.

Full-moon Uposatha and Memorial Service

On Friday 28 August, besides the Full-moon Uposatha Service, Nalanda Centre was also filled with devotees who came for a special prayer and memorial service for Nalanda member, Sis. Ooi Sock Khoong who passed away peacefully on 22 August 2015 due to sickness.  Nalanda Founder Bro. Tan led the congregation in ‘Pūja’ (offerings to the ‘Three Jewels’) and chanting.  Thereafter, Bro. Tan gave Dhamma teachings to the congregation which stirred our awareness about the value of life.

A spiritual and joyful ‘Dhamma Day’

On Sunday 26 July, devotees gathered at Nalanda Centre to observe ‘Dhamma Day’.   ‘Dhamma Day’ commemorates the preaching of Buddha’s first discourse after His Enlightenment – the ‘Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta’ –  where He taught His first five disciples the fundamental teachings of the ‘Four Noble Truths’.  As the day signifies the preaching of Buddha’s first discourse, Bro. Tan led devotees in reciting the famous ‘Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta’.
