Lecture on Pāli Language

Nalanda founder Bro. Tan will be giving a special lecture on “Pāli Language & Literature” this Friday at the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia (YBAM) Headquarters in Taman Mayang, Petaling Jaya.  The talk is organised by Universiti Malaya Buddhist group.

Dhamma talk at Nottingham University Buddhist Society

On Wednesday 2 November, Bro. Tan was invited to the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus in Semenyih, Selangor, to give a Dhamma talk.  More than 50 students turned up for his talk on what constitutes ‘true friendship’.

Undergraduates attend meditation retreat

On Sunday 9 October, thirty undergraduates from Universiti Putra Malaysia attended a one-day meditation retreat at Nalanda Centre organized by the university’s Buddhist Society.  The retreat held from 10am to 10pm was led by Venerable Bhikshuni Ji-Chi and Venerable Bhikshuni Chi-Xiang.

UPM Buddhist Society marks 50th anniversary

On Saturday 1 October, the UPM Buddhist Society (PBUPM) celebrated its 50th anniversary with an appreciation dinner in Shah Alam attended by its members, past and present.  The society was established in 1966 by staff members of then College of Agriculture Malaya, which was upgraded in 1973 to University of Agriculture Malaysia (in Malay, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia or UPM). In 1998, its name changed again to Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Nalandians attend Metta Lodge dinner

On Friday 30 September, Nalanda Johor Bahru Branch members attended a ‘Gala Dinner’ organised by Metta Lodge to raise funds for its new meditation centre located in Taman Johor Jaya.  The dinner was well supported with devotees from several Buddhist societies in Johor and Singapore.

‘Dhamma Day’ at Mangala Lodge

In August, Bro. Tan was invited to participate in ‘Dhamma Day’ observance at Mangala Lodge in Kampar, Perak.  Bro. Tan gave two Dhamma talks to the modest group of lecturers and students from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) who are mostly beginners to Buddhism.

Nalandians invited to book-launch

On 6 August, Nalanda Buddhist Society was invited to participate in a book-launching ceremony organised by Dharma Drum Mountain (DDM) Buddhist Centre Malaysia (马来西亚法鼓山道场).  The book 《聖嚴法師年譜》 was about the life and times of Dharma Drum Mountain founder, Venerable Master Sheng Yen.

Talk at S.M.K. Desa Mahkota

On Friday 1 July, Director of Nalanda Dhamma School Sis. Sunanda Ong was invited to S.M.K. Desa Mahkota, Kuala Lumpur, to participate in ‘Program Kerohanian Sekolah’ for 300 sixth-form students.  Sis. Sunanda gave a talk on the ‘Importance of Having a Belief’ where she introduced the basics of Buddhist spirituality – that it was a way of life to reduce our distress, and ultimately to end all suffering.  She also spoke about the ‘Three Refuges’ and the Buddha’s ‘Middle Path’ to Enlightenment.

Lecture on spread of Buddhism to Maritime Southeast Asia

On Thursday 2 June, Nalanda founder Bro. Tan was guest at a public lecture by Indian-American historian Professor Tansen Sen at Universiti Malaya (UM), Kuala Lumpur.  The special talk on “The Spread of Buddhism to Maritime Southeast Asia” was hosted by University of Malaya Sri Lankan Endowment Fund, and jointly organised by the UM Departments of History and Indian Studies.

Buddhist youth leadership workshop

From 3 to 5 June, eight Nalandians joined 120 youths from 10 other organisations to participate in the Seck Kia Eenh (SKE) Buddhist Youth Leadership Workshop in Malacca.  The talks at this workshop were presented by notable luminaries of the Buddhist communities in Malaysia and Indonesia.
