Nalanda Education Workshop 2.0

Teachers and Dhamma facilitators at Nalanda will mark this year’s “Education Day” with a workshop on 12 December to plan programmes for the next two years based on holistic education philosophy.  Officers from Nalanda Dhamma School, Nalanda Institute, the Free School, Youth Centre, and ‘Dhamma Families’ will participate in this important workshop, the second one to be held since 2013.

School facilitators’ training camp

From 16 to 18 September, Nalanda Dhamma School Johor Bahru Branch organised an energising Facilitators’ Training for twenty facilitators.  The 3-day training camp was conducted by School Director Sis. Sunanda Ong, to develop greater leadership and facilitation skills among the officers.

Joyful learning for Kelantanese campers

During the June school holidays, 10 Nalandians made the journey to Kelantan to help organise a Teenagers’ Learning Camp at Wat Pracacinaram in Wakaf Bharu.  122 youths aged between 13 and 17 years from various parts of Kelantan participated in the four-day camp, from 2 to 5 June.

Journey into Kedah’s past

During the recent school holidays, 75 Nalanda Dhamma School students from Sri Serdang and Johor Bahru were privileged to go on a study tour of Kedah’s historical sites and learn about the state’s amazing connection with early Buddhism, going back some 2,100 years!  The tour, which ran from 7 – 10 June, was led by Bro. Tan, an acknowledged expert on Buddhist history.  Among the interesting places visited were Semeling Jetty Complex; Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum in Merbok; as well as Wat Nikrodharam and Rumah Merdeka in Alor Setar.

Teenagers’ camp reported by Press

From 2 to 5 June, Nalanda Dhamma School co-organised a dynamic Dhamma camp in Kelantan for teenagers aged 13 to 17.  The 4-day camp was attended by 122 students from all over the East-Coast state.  School Director Sis. Sunanda led her team of 8 facilitators and youths to assist in running the holiday camp.

Learning to be effective facilitators

On Saturday 16 April, Nalanda Institute’s Department of Leadership & Management Studies conducted a training session specially tailored for facilitators of Nalanda Dhamma School.  Achariya Vijaya Samarawickrama, the Chairman of Nalanda Education Team, was invited to conduct the training on ‘Classroom Management’ and ‘Teaching Skills’.

Countdown to Dhamma Living Camp

On Saturday 12 March, Nalanda Centre was abuzz with activity as preparations for the upcoming Dhamma Living Camp reached its peak.  For several weeks now, the organising committee and camp facilitators have been continuously working towards the smooth-running and success of the camp.  Hard work and high spirits have been the order of the day for the dedicated team of volunteers, who have given nothing less than their genuine commitment and joyful effort.

Focussing on ‘Outcome’ instead of ‘Output’

On Sunday 21 February, after Nalanda Dhamma School’s annual ‘tea ceremony’, a group of facilitators gathered for a meeting with Nalanda founder Bro. H. S. Tan.  In his sharing, Bro. Tan reminded the facilitators that in their noble effort to conduct the school’s sessions, they should always keep in mind to achieve the “best outcome” and not just produce the “highest output”.

Training for Dhamma School facilitators

On Saturday 30 January, Sis Sunanda Ong and Sis. Nandini Tan conducted a special training session for facilitators of Nalanda Dhamma School.  In the first part of the training, Dhamma School Director Sis. Sunanda introduced the School’s programmes for the first semester to the facilitators; she also explained that the current focus would be on building good friendship, inculcating Buddhist culture, and achieving family well-being.

Dhamma School facilitators’ retreat

On 7 November, facilitators from Nalanda Dhamma School (NDS) gathered at Mangala Lodge, Kampar, to enjoy a well-deserved four-day break from their daily routine, away from the bustle of city life.  The annual retreat was fun yet educational, and a time to review the School’s progress as well as chart its course for next year.  Facilitators from Kelantan, who were members of the Dhammarakkhitta group, also joined their Nalanda counterparts at the retreat.
