Real ‘winner’ at the Olympics

After two weeks of competition, the first Olympic Games to be held in South America will draw to a close later today in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  The Malaysian team had their best ever performance at an Olympics by winning 4 silver medals and one bronze medal.

54 year old cancer survivor wins Olympic gold

At 54, he has overcome cancer and the loss of half a lung — now Santiago Lange is proving once again that nothing can stop him after winning Olympic gold at Rio 2016.  The Argentine, along with sailing partner Cecilia Carranza Saroli, took top spot in the Nacra 17 Mixed Multihull after a dramatic final medal race on Tuesday.

Indonesia’s 71st Independence Day

Today, we felicitate our Indonesian friends and their fellow countrymen on their nation’s 71st Independence Day.  The diverse peoples of Indonesia and Malaysia share a two-thousand year history of trade, transmigration, cultural exchanges, and political unions.  Vast regions of both countries were once part of the mighty Buddhist Empire of Srivijaya (7th to 13th centuries CE.), which left rich archaeological artefacts in Sumatra, Java, and the Malay Peninsula.

Long Live Her Majesty

Today marks the auspicious 84th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand.  And since 1976, the nation has also been celebrating Mother’s Day on 12 August in honour of Her Majesty – she being the symbolic ‘mother’ to Thai people.  Nalandians felicitate the Royal Family and people of Thailand on this blessed occasion.  We also wish our Thai friends a gratifying celebration of Mother’s Day.  Sotthi.

Today marks the Republic of Singapore’s 51st anniversary of independence.  Due to our long, common history, Malaysia and Singapore share so many peculiar attributes.  Our two countries’ past had been uniquely intertwined; and so is our future.  A thriving and prosperous Singapore is good for Malaysia, and vice versa.

Official birthday of His Majesty

Every year, Malaysians joyfully celebrate the official birthday of His Majesty the Yang DiPertuan Agong on the first Saturday of June.  Our present King, His Majesty Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah, is a doyen of Malaysian royalty, being the longest reigning Head of State in the country today.  Let us wish His Majesty the blessings of good health, happiness and peace, always.  Dirgahayu Tuanku!

Honouring an illustrious missionary monk

Dozens of devotees came to offer lunch dāna at Nalanda Centre on 15 January in honour of Ven. Sri Pandita Henepola Gunaratana Nāyaka Thero on the 61st anniversary of him becoming a ‘Dhammaduta’ (missionary monk).  In 1955, then 28 year-old Ven. Gunaratana left Sri Lanka on his first posting to serve the Buddhist community among the ‘untouchables’ in India.

Gunaratana is a renowned Buddhist meditation teacher and author of several influential works, such as the best-selling ‘Mindfulness in Plain English’.
