Happy ‘Malaysia Day’!

Today marks the 50th Anniversary of our nation.  On 16 September 1963, the Federation of Malaya merged with the newly-independent states of Sarawak, Sabah and Singapore to form a new nation – Malaysia.  Although Singapore later left the federation in 1965, ties between our two states have nevertheless remained close over the decades.

Nalanda’s Merdeka Day Message 2013

Today we celebrate our nation’s 56th Anniversary of Independence – ‘Merdeka Day’.  We are thankful to be able to observe this milestone in relative peace, harmony and prosperity.  We have to thank our forefathers and elders for their untiring work to hand us this inheritance which is Malaysia.  Our gratitude also goes to civil servants, private enterprises, good citizens and our foreign guest workers for helping us in the challenging task of nation-building.

On Wesak full-moon day, millions of Buddhists all over the world gather to pay tribute to the Three Jewels.  As we commemorate the Birth, Enlightenment and Passing Away of the Buddha, we reflect on His teachings with great respect and gratitude.  We renew our determination to learn and practise the Dhamma, with courage and with compassion.
