International Nurses Day

Today, May 12 is observed as International Nurses' Day across the world to appreciate and honour the services of nurses.  This celebration falls on the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, who is often regarded as the founder of modern nursing.  In her time, Nightingale went beyond the call of duty and braved through difficult situations to save lives out of compassion for those in need.

New Year Greetings

New Year celebrations abound this week for our friends in many parts of Asia – including India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Bangladesh, and many Malaysians of Indian origin, too. As families gather in joyful reunions to welcome the New Year, there are also communities who are facing challenges, including not being able to meet their basic needs.

History has shown that even powerful men were greatly influenced by their mothers during childhood, and grew up inheriting much of the values imparted matrilineally.  It is important to understand this matrilineal influence on the development of children, so that we could apply it to benefit humanity infinitely.

Today, the full-moon of the first lunar month, is known locally as “Chap Goh Meh” and marks the end of the 15-day Lunar New Year celebrations. It is also a significant day for the Chinese community as families would celebrate with another round of joyous reunion, and aspirations for a harmonious and bountiful year ahead.
