Discover the rich history of Kedah

The Kedah State authority in charge of tourism has chosen to feature the famous Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum and Mount Jerai on its posters for next year’s ‘Discover Kedah 2016’ programme. Nalanda Founder Bro. Tan remarked that the posters featuring historical sites in Kedah were well-chosen as the state was rich in culture and heritage.

Good progress at Sungai Petani Centre

On Tuesday 6 October, Bro. Tan made a quick visit to the Nalanda Education & Outreach Centre building site in Sungai Petani.  He was met there by Branch Chairman Bro. Khaw and Committee members Sis. Sumedha, Bro. Fong and Dr. Song.  Bro. Tan spent several hours inspecting the construction progress as well as chatted with the contractors.  He expressed joy in seeing everyone’s dedication to complete the Centre on time, and with quality work.

Gathering of spiritual friends

On 26 September, Nalanda Sungai Petani members congregated to celebrate Members’ Day.  During the Dhamma sharing session, Sis. Siew Chin spoke on the virtues of the Buddha.  She said when we recite Buddhanusati, the recollection of the Buddha, we are reminding ourselves of the sublime qualities of the Buddha, which help us to strengthen our faith and respect towards the Teacher.

Education Centre in Kedah progressing well

On 16 September, Nalanda Founder Bro.Tan made a visit to NEO Centre Sungai Petani (SP) in Kedah to witness its construction progress.  He was accompanied by Nalanda SP Branch Chairman Bro. Khaw, the Building Committee, and several branch members.

Kedah Members’ Day in August

On Saturday 22 August, Nalanda Sungai Petani Branch members gathered at Gurun Buddhist Association for their monthly Members’ Day.  During the meeting, Branch Chairman Bro. Seng Giap reminded members to reflect on the Dhamma teachings taught by Bro. Tan on 17 July and to practice in our daily lives.  After an interactive discussion, members agreed on a list of qualities, including faith, generosity and virtues for cultivation towards a good practitioner and good friend.

Branch members at ‘Family Fun Fair’

Over the weekend on 8 – 9 August, members from Nalanda branches in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Sungai Petani came to support the recent ‘Family Fun Fair’ – the Society’s fund-raising event in Sri Serdang.  It was a wonderful day as all members mingled and worked seamlessly with other Nalandians as we share a common culture of community service.

Members’ Day in Kedah

On Saturday 25 July, Nalanda Sungai Petani Branch members gathered at Gurun Buddhist Association for their monthly Members’ Day.  During the meeting, Bro. Khaw Keng Hooi joyfully shared on the ‘Four Noble Truths’.  He encouraged members to have courage (one of Nalanda’s Core Values) to do the same as part of learning and practice.

NEO Centre construction progressing well

On 2 July, Nalanda Founder Bro.Tan made a visit to NEO Centre Sungai Petani (SP) in Kedah to witness its progress.  He was accompanied by Nalanda SP Branch Chairman Bro. Khaw, Deputy Chairman Bro.Teoh, and Building Committee Members.  Project Coordinator Ar. Bro. Fong briefed the team on the progress of construction work, which began in April and is currently 42% completed.

Sungai Petani Branch Members’ Day

On Saturday 27 June, members of Nalanda Sungai Petani Branch came together eagerly for the monthly Members’ Day gathering.  Members watched a video recording of Nalanda Founder Bro. Tan’s teaching on “Taking Refuge”, where he explained the significance of taking refuge in the Three Jewels properly and with understanding.

Kedah Members’ Day in May

On Saturday 23 May, Nalanda Sungai Petani Branch held our monthly Members’ Day with much joy, especially with the presence of Nalanda Founder Bro Tan.  During the meeting, Sis. Ooi Joo See shared with members on the important subject of the “Noble Eightfold Path”.  Bro. Tan then elaborated on the seven stages of purification** (see Note below), quoting from ‘Rathavinīta Sutta’ – ‘The Relay Chariots’ (Majjhima Nikāya No. 24).  This is the gradual course of practising Dhamma to its complete fruition – in stages from one to seven.
