Living a ‘Life of Wisdom’

On Buddha Day 21 May, Nalanda founder Bro. H. S. Tan conducted a 2-hour Sutta Study session based on the theme of the Wesak celebrations – ‘A Life of Wisdom‘.  Despite it being a very long day with many other on-going Wesak activities, the mid-afternoon session attracted a large attendance of more than 160 people, with some devotees even traveling from other states to Nalanda Centre.

‘Buddha Day’ Programme in Serdang

Warmest greetings of mettā!  Nalanda Centre is observing this weekend’s auspicious ‘Buddha Day’ with three days of meaningful educational and spiritual programmes – comprising Dhamma teachings, sutta studies, meditation, an exhibition, and guided tours of the Centre with learning stations.  There will also be daily alms-giving to monks, blood donation, organ-donation campaign, and the iconic Sri Serdang ‘Heritage Procession’ – a truly awesome and unique cultural experience.

Investigating the cause of existence

On Thursday 4 February, a small group of Nalandian youths gathered just before the Chinese New Year holidays for an insightful learning on one of the Buddha’s profound teaching – the Paṭicca Samuppāda (Dependent Origination).  The session which was guided by Sis. Sunanda had everyone thinking about the cause of our ‘existence’.

Excursion to foster good friendship

On Sunday 24 January, 180 students of Nalanda Dhamma School and members of Nalanda Youth Centre went on an enjoyable outing at Putrajaya’s Botanical Gardens.  The students spent a glorious day in the open learning the meaning of  kalyāna-mittatā (spiritual friendship) through healthy outdoor activities.

Joyful first day at Dhamma School

Nalanda Dhamma School had its first session of 2016 today with great zest, and packed with fun learning activities for teenagers and children.  The School now operates at 4 different locations – the Teenage School at Nalanda Centre, Junior School at Nalanda House Sri Serdang, Junior School at NEO Centre Kuala Lumpur, and another Teenage School at NEO Centre Johor Bahru.

Dhamma School facilitators’ retreat

On 7 November, facilitators from Nalanda Dhamma School (NDS) gathered at Mangala Lodge, Kampar, to enjoy a well-deserved four-day break from their daily routine, away from the bustle of city life.  The annual retreat was fun yet educational, and a time to review the School’s progress as well as chart its course for next year.  Facilitators from Kelantan, who were members of the Dhammarakkhitta group, also joined their Nalanda counterparts at the retreat.

Seminar on ‘Positive Parenting’

On Saturday 31 October, Nalanda Dhamma School held its first forum for parents at Nalanda Centre to address the challenges being faced by mums and dads today.  Guest speaker Bro. Aggaphala Yap talked about the importance of ‘Positive Parenting’ and how it could be practised.

On Saturday 3 October, students of BPS 303 – Certificate in Buddhist Studies turned up for their second tutorial session with Bro. Ananda Fong.  The focus of the tutorial was to recapitulate on earlier lectures about the Ten Wholesome and Ten Unwholesome deeds.

Taking Refuge in the ‘Three Jewels’

On Sunday 13 September, Sis. Tan Yee Yong  conducted Lecture 2 of BPS 101 course – Buddhist Studies in Mandarin – which discussed reasons why human beings seek refuge in religion.  It could be due to fear, greed, ignorance or to overcome difficulties in facing challenges in life.  She further explained that by ‘taking refuge’ in the ‘Three Jewels’ – the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha – we are actually resolving to uphold the Buddha’s teaching as the guiding principle in our lives, and gradually work towards liberation from suffering.

Nalanda youths organised “D’ Challenge”

On Saturday 22 August, Nalanda Youth Centre hosted 20 youths for the “D’ Challenge” fun competition.  This programme was aimed at imparting essential values to youths who are facing many challenges today.  The programme began with Pūja (offerings to the ‘Three Jewels’) and welcoming speech by Nalanda Youth Leader, Bro. DiSheng.
