Nalanda’s Annual Gimhana Retreat

For seven weeks after the Buddha’s Enlightenment on Wesak full-moon in May, He contemplated on the Dhamma with His perfectly clear faculty of comprehension.  Then, He travelled for seven days from Bodhgaya to Sarnath, where He preached the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta on the Asalha full-moon (Dhamma Day) in July.

Gimhana Retreat from 8 June to 22 July

Nalanda organizes 3 special retreats annually – the ‘Hemanta’ in January, ‘Gimhana’ in June-July, and ‘Vassana’ in October-November.  Each of these 3 retreats focuses on different aspects of personal, communal and spiritual growth.

‘Calming Down’ to 2013

Nalandians usher in 2013 with pūja, meditation, and wise reflection. On 31 December 2012, Nalanda members and devotees gathered at the Sri Serdang Nalanda Centre following an annual tradition to reflect on the passing of 2012, and to usher in the New Year.  Dressed in elegant Nalanda sarong uniforms, devotees greeted each other joyfully with words of thanks, mutual appreciation, and encouragement.

Asalha Observance at Nalanda

Asalha Full-moon Day falls exactly 2 months after Wesak Day.  It marks the three important events in the history of Buddhism – the day Buddha Gotama was conceived; the day He renounced worldly life to become an ascetic; and the day He first preached the Dhamma as the Enlightened Teacher.

Bhavana Day

Thirty participants ascended the Tan Yew Lai Hilltop Buddhist Centre in Puchong for a 3-day meditation retreat under the guidance of Sayalay Susīla. A Theravada nun since 1991, Sayalay practised Vipassana meditation intensively for many years in Myanmar under the guidance of well-known masters. The participants picked up precious pointers on the practice from the experienced and amiable nun. Feedback from the yogis were very positive and many were inspired to keep on practising after the retreat.
