Tribute to a ‘Giver of Life’

On 6 October, six-year old Ooi Zhi Ting was playing with her sisters, aged 15 and 11, in an apartment block’s swimming pool.  The little girl from Penang reportedly suffered a leg cramp and sank to the bottom.  A resident who witnessed the incident pulled Zhi Ting out of the water, and she was rushed to a hospital.  Unfortunately, the little girl passed away later.

Happy ‘Malaysia Day’ 2014

Today, we mark the 51st anniversary of the formation of “Malaysia”.  Our nation was born when the Federation of Malaya merged with Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore in 1963.  (Singapore, however left the federation in 1965 to forge its own destiny.)

Terrorism is unjust and inhumane

‘September 11th’ – otherwise another mundane and beautiful date on the calendar – would forever be remembered with sorrow and disdain for the dastardly acts of terrorists hijacking airplanes, and using them as missiles in their assault on New York’s World Trade Center.  Their immoral act caused the untimely deaths of nearly 3,000 innocent victims, and sent shock waves throughout the world.

Malaysia – My Country, My Home

On 31 August 2014, we celebrate Malaysia’s 57th Independence Day.  Arguably, it has been a difficult year for Malaysia with the twin accidents of MH370 and 17 still fresh in our thoughts.  Yet we have faith that with collective will and unity, we can overcome such tragedies as one nation and people.

Sandy Lim at Nalanda Centre last night.  Today we shall perform Sanghika Dāna and share merits with the departed sisters-in-Dhamma.  Wherever they are, may they be well and peaceful.  Sotthi.

The most poignant journey home

Whenever a Malaysia Airlines flight from overseas lands at KLIA, there will always be that welcoming and reassuring on-board announcement – “…and to all Malaysians, ‘Welcome home’”.  For many citizens, that simple but familiar greeting never fails to warm our hearts.

In Remembrance – MH370

Today marks exactly 5 months since ‘MH370’ vanished over the Indian Ocean on 8 March 2014.  The mystery of its disappearance remains unsolved; and the memory and pain of those who lost their loved ones remain fresh.  Since ‘MH370’, we have again been shocked by the crashing of a few other airliners in July, including another Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 – the ‘MH17’ – with a great loss of lives.
