Eight years since MH17 tragedy

It has been exactly 8 years since Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down while flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.  None of the 298 people on board survived.  The trial of four men accused of downing MH17 started in March 2020, and is still ongoing; the verdict may only be given in the last quarter of this year.

7th Anniversary of MH17

It has been 7 years since Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over Eastern Ukraine as it was enroute to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam.  After years of investigations by an international team, four men have been trial since March 2020 in the Netherlands, for their alleged part in downing MH17 and killing all 298 lives on board.

Today marks the 6th anniversary of the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 which was enroute to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam.  Three hours after taking off from Schipol Airport, the Boeing 777 was shot down over Eastern Ukraine and all 298 lives on board were lost.

Remembering the victims of MH17

4 years ago today, Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 took off from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport at 12.31pm local time on its return leg to Kuala Lumpur.  3 hours later, the Boeing 777 was shot down over Eastern Ukraine, causing the loss of all 298 innocent lives on board.  Sadly, no party was held accountable for the terrorist attack until today.  Justice is still not served.

3rd Anniversary of MH17

2014 was the worst year in the history of Malaysian aviation, when two Boeing 777 airliners belonging to Malaysia Airlines were lost – MH370 vanished mysteriously over the Indian Ocean on 8 March 2014; and MH17 was struck by a missile over Ukraine on 17 July 2014.  The two incidents resulted in a combined loss of 537 lives.

2nd Anniversary of MH17

It has been two years since the tragic downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Eastern Ukraine on 17 July 2014, while on a scheduled flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.  The great loss of 298 innocent lives from that incident, and 239 lives from the earlier MH370 calamity, had cast a pall over Malaysia ever since.  Our nation is still reeling from the trauma of this double catastrophe.

Service Sunday & Memorial Service for MH17

On Sunday 19 July, in conjunction with the memorial service for MH17, Sis. Tan Yee Yong presented a Dhamma talk titled “Finding Peace in Turmoil”.  She shared a few stories and her personal experiences which inspired devotees.  Sis. Yee Yong elaborated on ‘Impermanence’ and the ‘Four Noble Truths’, quoting the ‘Ambalatthikā-rāhulovāda Sutta’ of Majjhima Nikāya.

It has been 2 months since the tragic downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukrainian airspace on 17 July, while on its routine flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.  The shock caused by this despicable act reverberated throughout the world – there was simply no excuse for such a horrific and senseless attack on an innocent civil airliner!
