The Nalanda Free School was established in June 2010 by a group of dedicated volunteers to provide free tuition and other educational support to academically-weak and needy students. We aim to provide quality teaching by caring tutors, and offer personal attention to help students’ learning and comprehension by offering tutorials in important subjects such as languages, mathematics and science.

The first talk was at Nalanda Centre, “From Darkness to Light“, and the second one in Mandarin was at NEO Centre Happy Garden, “如何面对生活中的烦恼”. We were very honoured to receive 3 senior monks on alms-round, including the Abbot of Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple Ven. Sri Saranankara Nayaka Thero, and Abbot of Tusita Hermitage Ven. U Mangala.

Willie) on a visit to NEO Centre Johor Bahru. The NDS team had several insightful discussions with Nalanda Johor Branch members on “Quality Volunteer Service“.

The entourage left NEO Centre in JB on 22 November and stopped over for lunch at our ‘spiritual home’ – Nalanda Centre Sri Serdang. The group of 30 participants also visited the Buddhist Maha Vihara in Kuala Lumpur for a familiarization tour, thereafter left for Sungai Petani in Kedah. Read more
We are very honoured to welcome the visit of Venerable Sri Pandit Henepola Gunaratana Māha Nāyaka Thero to Malaysia! Ven. Gunaratana at 86 years of age is the Theravada Sangha Nāyaka (senior-most and honorary 'Chief monk') of the USA and North America. Also popularly known as ‘Bhante G’, he is a renowned Buddhist meditation teacher and author of several influential works, such as the best-selling ‘Mindfulness in Plain English’.
Read moreThe monthly Pindacāra Programme at Taman O.U.G. and Happy Garden morning markets was joyfully undertaken on 2 November with the most Venerable B. Sri Saranankara Nayaka Thero leading three other monks on the alms-round. Monthly Pindacāra there has been running continuously for 18 months and it has attracted a loyal and devoted crowd of supporters, besides inspiring more new donors every time. Young and old, market-goers and stall operators alike, everyone feels the joy of giving alms to passing monks. Read more
Several senior Nalanda officers led by Deputy President Bro. Lee Teck Beng, arrived at Sungai Petani on 14 September for a brief visit to familiarize themselves with Kedahan Buddhist communities. Besides Bro. Lee, the other officers include Honorary Treasurer Sis. May Wong, Assistant Secretary Sis. Mudita Chan, Manager Sis. Joyce Lim, KL Branch Pro-tem Chairman Bro. Eugene Yong, and KL Branch Assistant Secretary Sis. Ng Tung Yan.
On Saturday, 7 September, Nalanda Dharma School students, parents and devotees gathered at the NEO Centre in Happy Garden, Kuala Lumpur to celebrate the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival in a meaningful way. Opening the session with puja and chanting, it was followed by a Dhamma sharing by Sis. Faith Teh.
