First anniversary of 2015 Nepal earthquake

Today marks the first anniversary of the destructive earthquake which devastated many parts of Nepal on 25 April 2015.  More than 8,000 people were killed throughout the country, plus a hundred others in neighbouring India, Tibet and Bangladesh.  Let us spare some time to think about the victims of the earthquake and their loved ones.  Reflect also on the impermanence and uncertainty of life.  Let us live wisely and mindfully every day.

Earth shattering and heart-breaking

Three powerful earthquakes in the past four days struck Kyushu Island in Southern Japan and Ecuador in South America, causing serious damage and the loss of many lives.  Dozens have been killed in each of the two shaken countries, with the death toll expected to rise further as search efforts continue.

Denounce terrorism, but not with hatred

“Months ago they struck Paris… and now, Brussels.  Those terrorists perform murderous acts to put fear and hate into our minds.  They want to disrupt our peaceful and productive lives.  Such acts of terrorism should be censured and denounced, no question about that.  But we should not give in to hatred (towards the terrorists).  It is easy to hate people who want to harm and kill the innocent; but please don’t give in to that.

2nd Anniversary of MH370

8 March 2016 marks the second anniversary of Malaysia Airlines MH370′s mysterious disappearance over the Indian Ocean.  Even after two years of intensive and extensive search, the main wreckage of the B777 aircraft is still not found.

Full-moon Uposatha and Memorial Service

On Friday 28 August, besides the Full-moon Uposatha Service, Nalanda Centre was also filled with devotees who came for a special prayer and memorial service for Nalanda member, Sis. Ooi Sock Khoong who passed away peacefully on 22 August 2015 due to sickness.  Nalanda Founder Bro. Tan led the congregation in ‘Pūja’ (offerings to the ‘Three Jewels’) and chanting.  Thereafter, Bro. Tan gave Dhamma teachings to the congregation which stirred our awareness about the value of life.

Condolences to Aircrash victims’ families

On Sunday 16 August, a tragic air-crash took place in Papua Province, Indonesia.  The Trigana Air service was on a routine domestic flight from Jayapura to Oksibil but flew into bad weather.  The crash killed all 54 passengers and crew on board. Nalanda members offer our deepest condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones.  We empathize with your loss and grief.  We also pray that the casualties of this tragedy rest in Peace.  ‘Santi’.

On Thursday 30 July, the Āsālha Full-moon Uposatha Service was observed at Nalanda Centre with offerings to the ‘Three Jewels’ and recitation of the ‘Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta’ – the Buddha’s first discourse on ‘Turning the Wheel of Dhamma’.

First Anniversary of MH17 Tragedy

Today marks the first anniversary of the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukrainian airspace, while on a routine flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on 17 July 2014.  All 298 people on board perished in the tragedy.  The great loss of lives from this horrific incident is still felt by many people.
