Obituary – Farewell Aunty Tan

It is with deep respects that we announce the passing of a distinguished member of the Malaysian Buddhist community, Mdm. Chin Kim Lan, or better known to us as ‘Aunty Tan’, on Saturday 28 October 2017 in Kuala Lumpur.  Her funeral will be held on Wednesday 1 November, at 1.00pm.  Aunty Tan is the beloved mother of Nalanda Institute Director, Achariya Tan Siang Chye.

Day of remembrance and gratitude

Thursday 31 August marked the 11th anniversary of the passing of Nalanda’s late spiritual adviser, Venerable K. Sri Dhammananda, as well as being Malaysia’s 60th National Day.  Nalanda founder Bro. Tan delivered a Dhamma talk on gratitude to commemorate these two occasions.

Final farewell to a beloved monarch

The Royal Cremation ceremony for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand will take place on 26 October.  We join people across the world in bidding him final farewell.  Though he had passed on, King Bhumibol’s legacy endures in the thousands of royal projects he initiated in his seven decades on the throne.  His memory will no doubt live on in the hearts and minds of millions of Thais.

1st anniversary of King Bhumibol

Today marks the first anniversary of the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand.  His Majesty was the longest-reigning monarch in the world at the time of his death last October at age 88.  He is still beloved and sorely missed by Thai people everywhere, with 12.7 million visitors having paid respects to his remains at the Grand Palace in Bangkok.

4th Memorial Day for teachers

Today marks the 4th anniversary of the passing of eminent Pāli Scholar Venerable Kakkapalliye Anuruddha Nayaka Thero, and renowned meditation teacher Acharya Satya Narayan Goenka.  Nalanda Centre will host a simple tribute to both teachers at 7.30pm this evening with meditation and chanting.

3rd Anniversary of MH17

2014 was the worst year in the history of Malaysian aviation, when two Boeing 777 airliners belonging to Malaysia Airlines were lost – MH370 vanished mysteriously over the Indian Ocean on 8 March 2014; and MH17 was struck by a missile over Ukraine on 17 July 2014.  The two incidents resulted in a combined loss of 537 lives.

3rd Anniversary of MH370

Today marks the third anniversary of Malaysia Airlines MH370′s mysterious disappearance.  Even after intensive searching, the aircraft has not been located.  Thus, many questions remain unanswered as to the fate of that flight, and its 239 passengers and crew.

25th anniversary of Ajahn Chah’s passing

16 January 2017 marks the 25th anniversary of Ajahn Chah’s passing.  Venerable Ajahn was one of the most revered and influential Buddhist teachers in the modern era.  He was a doyen of the “forest tradition” who attracted many Thai and foreign practitioners to be ordained under him.

His Majesty’s memory lives on

For many years, Nalanda Buddhist Society had been marking 5 December with an annual felicitation message to the people of Thailand on the occasion of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s birthday.  This year, we are continuing with that tradition, but the message is inevitably sombre.  The late King is no more; but his legacy and memory will no doubt go on forever.

Memorial tribute to King Bhumibol

It has been a month since the passing of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand.  Thai people are still mourning their great loss of a highly-respected and much-loved monarch.  On Sunday 16 October, Bro. H. S. Tan led an official memorial tribute at Nalanda Centre to His Late Majesty.  In attendance were the President of Theravada Buddhist Council of Malaysia Bro. Tan Leng Huat and representatives from several Buddhist societies.
