Full-moon Uposatha and Memorial Service

On Friday 28 August, besides the Full-moon Uposatha Service, Nalanda Centre was also filled with devotees who came for a special prayer and memorial service for Nalanda member, Sis. Ooi Sock Khoong who passed away peacefully on 22 August 2015 due to sickness.  Nalanda Founder Bro. Tan led the congregation in ‘Pūja’ (offerings to the ‘Three Jewels’) and chanting.  Thereafter, Bro. Tan gave Dhamma teachings to the congregation which stirred our awareness about the value of life.

BPS 101 Course – Buddhist Studies in Mandarin

On Sunday 23 August, Head of Department for Buddhist and Pāli Studies Sis. Sandy Lim gave a briefing to participants who have registered, and those keen to understand more about the course.  She explained on the course structure, and the modules (‘Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha’; the ‘Four Noble Truths’; ‘Kamma’; and ‘Wholesome Deeds’) which will be covered within the course duration.  The briefing session was well attended by more than 30 participants and many took the opportunity to clear their enquiries on the course.

Pindacāra in Kuala Lumpur

On Saturday 1 August, the monthly educational ‘Pindacāra’ Programme at Sri Petaling and Happy Garden markets was held with three venerable Sangha members going on alms-round.  The morning Pūja and chanting session at NEO Centre Kuala Lumpur was led by Branch Chairman, Bro. Eugene.  Nalandians and volunteers then proceeded to Sri Petaling and subsequently to Happy Garden for the alms-round.

Kedah Members’ Day in August

On Saturday 22 August, Nalanda Sungai Petani Branch members gathered at Gurun Buddhist Association for their monthly Members’ Day.  During the meeting, Branch Chairman Bro. Seng Giap reminded members to reflect on the Dhamma teachings taught by Bro. Tan on 17 July and to practice in our daily lives.  After an interactive discussion, members agreed on a list of qualities, including faith, generosity and virtues for cultivation towards a good practitioner and good friend.

Ven. Prof. W. Wimalaratana visits Nalanda

On Tuesday 18 August, Venerable Prof. Dr. W. Wimalaratana from the University of Colombo and his entourage – Venerables Alubomulle Dhammalankara Thero, Marthuwela Vijithasiri, Kolonnawe Siri Sudassi Thero, Dhammasiri and Lecturer Dr. D.A.C. Suranga Silva, came to Nalanda Centre on a familiarization visit.  The visiting Sangha members were warmly received by Nalandians including host Sis. Nandini Tan, who brought them on a tour of Nalanda Centre and Youth Centre.

Nalanda Free School Exam–Preparation Seminar

On Saturday 15 August, 180 students from three secondary schools in Seri Kembangan and Kajang attended an informative and inspiring SPM Chemistry Examination Preparation Seminar at SMJK Yu Hua Kajang.  The full-day seminar was jointly organised by Nalanda Free School and SMJK Yu Hua Kajang to prepare the students for their upcoming SPM examination.

BPS 303 Course – Ten Wholesome Deeds

On Saturday 8 August, Achariya Tan Siang Chye began the lecture by explaining the meaning of “Kusala Kamma”, (wholesome deeds).  The results of the deeds are determined by the intention which is shown through our action, speech and thought.  Hence one’s progress or digress is dependent on one’s understanding and cultivation, and not from external sources.
