On Sunday 12 October, Clinical Psychologist Ms. Low Mi Yen gave an interesting talk at Nalanda Centre with the title, “Watering Our Own Garden”, which was about practising compassion towards ourselves.  We can care and love others, but it is important that we do not neglect and lose ourselves in the process.

Memorial Pūja and Service Sunday

On Sunday 28 September, devotees gathered at Nalanda Centre to attend the Memorial Pūja in conjunction with the 1st anniversary of the passing of the most Venerable Prof. Kakkapalliye Anuruddha Nayaka Thero and Acharya Satya Narayan Goenka.  The late Ven. Anuruddha was one of Founder Bro. Tan’s teachers.

Practising ‘Mettā’ with Dr. Victor Wee

On 21 September, Dato’ Seri Dr. Victor Wee gave a Dhamma talk during Service Sunday on ‘Mettā’ (Loving kindness) at Nalanda Centre.  Dr. Victor Wee spoke about ways to develop loving-kindness in daily life.  The essence of ‘Mettā’ is universal friendliness; it is developing kindness towards all beings without discriminating between the liked and disliked.  Anger on the other hand, is a destructive emotion and the opposite of ‘Mettā’.

Charlie Chia shared about the way to be a happy and successful person.  One needs the conditions of good kamma, being in the right environment, and making the right effort to be ‘successful’.

Community gardening day

Sunday, 14 September is Nalanda’s annual ‘Community Gardening Day’!  Every year close to ‘Malaysia Day’, Nalandians and the surrounding community will gather in Sri Serdang to clean and green the neighbourhood.  This is one of our efforts to commemorate the country’s founding day, by taking care of cleanliness in our vicinity, and to plant suitable local trees and shrubs to create a better environment for everyone.

Workshop on ‘Embracing the Beginner’s Mind’

On Sunday 10 August, Sis. K. C. Chiang, ‎an accountant-turned-clinical psychologist, conducted a workshop on ‘Embracing the Beginner’s Mind’ at Nalanda Centre.  A ‘beginner’s mind’ is an essential attribute for the cultivation of ‘Learning’, one of Nalanda’s Eight Core Values.

Friends from Shah Alam visit Nalanda

On Sunday 3 August, 42 members from Shah Alam Buddhist Society (SABS) and its Dhamma School made a half-day visit to Nalanda Centre.  They were warmly welcomed by Nalandians, and joyfully participated in our Service Sunday with a talk by Dr. Phang Cheng Kar.  At the same time, the SABS Dhamma School students joined Nalandian teenagers for group activities organised by Nalanda Dharma School (NDS).

‘Meditation made easy’ by Dr. Phang Cheng Kar

On 3 August, Dr. Phang Cheng Kar, a practising psychiatrist and a resident speaker at Nalanda, delivered a talk on ‘Meditation made easy’ during Service Sunday.  The talk attracted a large crowd as the practice of meditation, with scientifically-proven benefits, is becoming more popular worldwide.  We perform exercises to achieve physical well-being; but the key to attain mental well-being is through meditation.

Sunday talk on ‘Harmonious Speech’

On Sunday 27 July, Sis. Tan Yee Yong delivered a Dhamma Talk on “Harmonious Speech” based on the teachings of the Buddha.  This topic was a fitting one because it happened to be ‘Samaggi Day’ (‘unity and concord’ observance day), which falls on the last Sunday of every month.
