Venerable Narada’s Commemoration Day

On Sunday 26 October, Nalandians gathered in unity to commemorate yet another great Buddhist luminary – Venerable Narada Nāyaka Māha Thero.  This commemoration day programme was both initiated and organised by Pustaka Nalanda (the library).  The commemoration service began with pūja and chanting, followed by Dhamma teachings by Nalanda Founder Bro Tan.  He spoke about values that Ven. Narada held on to, and how the late venerable was a great Buddhist leader for us to emulate and learn from. Read more

Joyous birthday, dear bhante!

Nalanda members and devotees would like to felicitate and pay tribute to Most Venerable Sri Saranankara Adhikarana Nāyaka Thero on his birthday.  We always remember the good deeds done by Ven. Saranankara for the community of monks and laity, and dedicate our metta-karunā to his well-being and happiness.  We are grateful that such an inspiring monk as Ven. Sri Saranankara lives among us!  We wish Bhante the best of health and great fulfillment in your humanitarian and education mission.  We humbly salute thee, Bhante!

Pustaka Nalanda is organising a commemoration service for Venerable Narada Nāyaka Maha Thera, a prolific Dhamma teacher, speaker, writer and commentator.  Join us tomorrow morning for a presentation by the Director of Pustaka Nalanda, Bro. Ānanda Fong, on the life of the late Ven. Narada and his immense contribution to the propagation of the Buddha’s teachings in many countries.  Svagatam!  All are welcome!

‘Dhamma’ and ‘Buddhism’

“The Buddha’s original teaching is not a religion as the word is conventionally understood. The Buddha taught ‘Dhamma’ – a moral, wholesome way of life which is universal, and can be practised by anyone. He did not teach ‘Buddhism’, and was not interested in making anyone a ‘Buddhist’.”

First anniversary tribute to Acharya S. N. Goenka

Today marks the first anniversary of renowned meditation teacher, Acharya Satya Narayan Goenka’s passing on 29 September 2013.  Nalanda Buddhist Society would like to pay tribute to a prodigious teacher who had created the conditions for millions of practitioners to experience the technique and bliss of ‘Vipassana Meditation’ first taught by the Buddha 2,600 years ago!

31 August 2014 not only marked the 57th Independence Day of Malaya, but also the 8th anniversary of our late Spiritual Advisor Ven. Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda’s passing.  Nalandians gathered on this day to commemorate our late teacher’s lifetime missionary work and celebrate his spirit and teachings that brought a huge impact to the Buddhist community.

Day of Commemoration & Reflection

Teachers’ Day Celebration in Johor Bahru

On Saturday 19 July, teachers and students of Nalanda Free School Johor Bahru Branch celebrated “Teachers’ Day” at NEO Centre JB.  Since its inception, teachers, students and their parents formed a firm rapport, encouraged by the active participation of all parties.  Teachers and parents are well aware of the roles they play in guiding students to experience holistic education, where good values and refined culture are instilled.

An illuminating finale to Gimhāna Retreat

On Wednesday 16 July, Nalanda Centre was packed with devotees eager to listen to the last Gimhāna teachings for 2014.  It was indeed a worthwhile effort as Bro. Tan delivered an illuminating finale on the gradual development of a ‘good mind’.  Recalling his earlier talks about a ‘good heart’ versus a ‘good mind’, he asked rhetorically –‘What is this “mind”?’
