Learning about career options

On 23 July, Nalanda Free School hosted a ‘Career & Education Workshop’ for fifth formers to guide them in choosing tertiary courses and making career choices.  Counselor Bro. Aggaphala Yap conducted the session, starting by introducing many career fields available nowadays.

Talk at S.M.K. Desa Mahkota

On Friday 1 July, Director of Nalanda Dhamma School Sis. Sunanda Ong was invited to S.M.K. Desa Mahkota, Kuala Lumpur, to participate in ‘Program Kerohanian Sekolah’ for 300 sixth-form students.  Sis. Sunanda gave a talk on the ‘Importance of Having a Belief’ where she introduced the basics of Buddhist spirituality – that it was a way of life to reduce our distress, and ultimately to end all suffering.  She also spoke about the ‘Three Refuges’ and the Buddha’s ‘Middle Path’ to Enlightenment.

Student officers’ meeting

Recently, newly-elected student officers had a special meeting to understand their roles in leading their peers at Nalanda Dhamma School.  The School is specially catered for teenagers aged between 13 and 17.  Every student is placed in either one of the two ‘houses’ – Naga House or Garuda House.  At the beginning of every year, members of each House elect their officers – a House Captain, Deputy Captain and two House Prefects – to lead the team.  This has been the tradition of Nalanda Dhamma School since its inception in 2005.

Dhamma School study tour to Kedah

During the recent school holidays in June, Nalanda Dhamma School organized a special 4-day study tour to Bujang Valley in Kedah for 75 teachers and students. We were privileged to be led by Bro. Tan, who is an acknowledged expert on Buddhist history in Southeast Asia. With his informative and lively narration, every turn along our journey seemed to hold surprises for us to discover!

Joyful learning for Kelantanese campers

During the June school holidays, 10 Nalandians made the journey to Kelantan to help organise a Teenagers’ Learning Camp at Wat Pracacinaram in Wakaf Bharu.  122 youths aged between 13 and 17 years from various parts of Kelantan participated in the four-day camp, from 2 to 5 June.

Journey into Kedah’s past

During the recent school holidays, 75 Nalanda Dhamma School students from Sri Serdang and Johor Bahru were privileged to go on a study tour of Kedah’s historical sites and learn about the state’s amazing connection with early Buddhism, going back some 2,100 years!  The tour, which ran from 7 – 10 June, was led by Bro. Tan, an acknowledged expert on Buddhist history.  Among the interesting places visited were Semeling Jetty Complex; Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum in Merbok; as well as Wat Nikrodharam and Rumah Merdeka in Alor Setar.

Early this month, 10 Nalandians made the journey to Kelantan to organise a Teenager’s Learning Camp at Wat Pracacinaram.  About 122 participants, aged 13 to 17 years, from various parts of Kelantan participated in the four-day camp, from 2 – 5 June.

Teenagers’ camp reported by Press

From 2 to 5 June, Nalanda Dhamma School co-organised a dynamic Dhamma camp in Kelantan for teenagers aged 13 to 17.  The 4-day camp was attended by 122 students from all over the East-Coast state.  School Director Sis. Sunanda led her team of 8 facilitators and youths to assist in running the holiday camp.

Students connecting with Nature

On Tuesday 31 May, Nalanda Free School organised a hiking trip for Secondary School students.  The trip was led by the Free School Principal Sister Lee, with the assistance of 5 volunteer teachers.  The aim of the outing was to provide students and teachers with opportunity to bond outside the classroom, with team-building activities to help them understand the importance of cooperation and teamwork.
