Ajahn Chah memorial today

Today marks the 25th anniversary of Ajahn Chah’s passing.  Thousands of his disciples and students returned to Wat Pah Pong in Ubon Ratchathani to observe the occasion with meditation, Dhamma teaching, and merit making.  Among the senior disciples present were Luang Phor Liem, successor to Ajahn Chah as Abbot of Wat Pah Pong, and Luang Phor Sumedho, Ajahn Chah’s senior-most Western disciple and the first Abbot of Wat Pah Nanachat.

25th anniversary of Ajahn Chah’s passing

16 January 2017 marks the 25th anniversary of Ajahn Chah’s passing.  Venerable Ajahn was one of the most revered and influential Buddhist teachers in the modern era.  He was a doyen of the “forest tradition” who attracted many Thai and foreign practitioners to be ordained under him.

His Majesty’s memory lives on

For many years, Nalanda Buddhist Society had been marking 5 December with an annual felicitation message to the people of Thailand on the occasion of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s birthday.  This year, we are continuing with that tradition, but the message is inevitably sombre.  The late King is no more; but his legacy and memory will no doubt go on forever.

Memorial tribute to King Bhumibol

It has been a month since the passing of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand.  Thai people are still mourning their great loss of a highly-respected and much-loved monarch.  On Sunday 16 October, Bro. H. S. Tan led an official memorial tribute at Nalanda Centre to His Late Majesty.  In attendance were the President of Theravada Buddhist Council of Malaysia Bro. Tan Leng Huat and representatives from several Buddhist societies.

On Sunday 4 September, Nalanda youths invited Sis. Paruadi to talk about finding the purpose of life.  Sis. Paruadi said that the purpose of life can be discovered after deep reflection on one’s own potentials, inclinations, and personality.  Knowing one’s purpose of life brings fulfilment and ignites the passion within.

It has been a week since the passing of the beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and the people of Thailand are slowly coming to terms with this great loss and collective grief. The void in their hearts created by the king’s demise cannot be quickly or easily filled. Time alone can heal.

Visitors to Nalanda Centre

Nalanda Centre recently received the visit of Ajahn Thipawan from Thailand and Mae Chee Punnisa of Gotami Vihara, Malaysia.  It was the third time Ajahn Thipawan had visited Nalanda since her first trip here back in 2005.

Thai forest monks visit Nalanda

On Saturday 2 July, Nalanda Centre was honoured by the presence of Luang Por Sophon, the Abbot of Wat Bueng Latthiwan, which is a branch monastery of Wat Nong Pah Pong in the Ajahn Chah Thai forest tradition.  As a boon, Luang Por Sophon was accompanied by Luang Por Nusin Santajitto (Abbot of Wat Katthaliwan), Luang Por Siri, Ajahn Thinakorn, Ajahn Pramual, Phra Jirapat and Phra Somchay.  The monastic entourage was on a 2-week visit through Malaysia.

Thailand hit by 11 bombs in 24 hours

From yesterday afternoon until this morning, suspected terrorists detonated 11 bombs in Southern Thailand within 24 hours, killing 4 people and injuring dozens more.  The bombing seemed to target mainly tourist centres of Hua Hin, Phuket, Phang-Nga, Surat Thani, and Trang.
