Visit to Nalanda Book Café

On 13 January, Bro. Tan paid a visit to Nalanda Book Café in Sri Petaling to observe its staff training programme.  Several Nalandian youths who were volunteering there were pleasantly surprised by his presence.  Bro. Tan spent an hour chatting with the crew and volunteers to listen to their plans and aspirations.  He encouraged everyone to work gradually but diligently to fulfil their personal potential and realise noble aspirations at the same time.

Temple visit to start the year

Nalanda leaders usually start the New Year by visiting Buddhist viharas in a tradition stretching back to 2004; and this year was no exception.  President Sis. Evelyn, Deputy President Bro. Charlie Teng, Honorary Secretary Bro. Pee, as well as Board Members Bro. Chan and Sis. Santī were among a group of Nalanda officers who paid a visit to the Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple in Sentul in the first week of January.

Visiting Nalandians in Kedah

Bro. Tan made a whirlwind tour to Kedah earlier this month to bid Nalandians there a grateful close to a marvellous 2016, and a joyful welcoming of 2017.  He first stopped-over in Alor Setar to meet with members before proceeding to NEO Centre Sungai Petani for an evening gathering.

Back home to a “hero’s welcome”

On 1 December, 20 youths and students from Nalanda Dhamma School left for Johor Bahru to help conduct a Dhamma camp for teenagers there.  They returned joyfully to Sri Serdang on 4 December to a warm, late-night welcome by smiling teachers and parents.

Family outing to Putrajaya

On 23 October, Nalanda Kuala Lumpur Branch organised a family trip for its members to Taman Putra Perdana in Putrajaya.  Sixty-four Nalandians and their family members, including students from the Dhamma School, took part in the outing.

Youths explore historic Malacca

During their 3-day stay in Malacca to attend the Seck Kia Eenh Temple leadership workshop, Nalandian youths took the opportunity to explore the historical city of Malacca.  The quaint city centre had been inscribed by UNESCO as a ‘World Heritage Site’ in 2008, and is quite worth at least a half-day tour.

Dhamma talk at Seremban Sudhamma

On Saturday 23 July, Bro. Tan gave an uplifting Dhamma talk at Sudhamma Buddhist Society in Seremban.  It was his first visit and talk at Sudhamma in more than 4 years, and he remarked that, “it’s great to be back at a homely centre and a familiar crowd”.

Sponsoring food for welfare homes

On 2 July and 16 July, Nalanda officers paid separate visits to Tong Sim Senior Citizens’ Care Centre and Ci Hang Chempaka Welfare Association respectively.  They were at the two welfare homes to deliver food items such as rice, cooking oil, dried food, and vegetables which were kindly sponsored by devotees.  Nalanda President Sis. Evelyn who led the visits also offered the homes Nalanda ‘Family Fun Fair’ coupons for them to purchase other necessities at the Fair.

2nd Samaneri Novitiate Programme

On Thursday 7 July, Nalanda founder Bro. Tan and Sis. Nandinī paid respects at the Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple in Sentul where the 2nd Theravāda Samaneri Novitiate Programme was being held.  More than 30 ladies ordained temporarily in order to experience the joys of monastic life.

Students connecting with Nature

On Tuesday 31 May, Nalanda Free School organised a hiking trip for Secondary School students.  The trip was led by the Free School Principal Sister Lee, with the assistance of 5 volunteer teachers.  The aim of the outing was to provide students and teachers with opportunity to bond outside the classroom, with team-building activities to help them understand the importance of cooperation and teamwork.
