Wesak 2013 ‘Dhamma Appreciation Night’

A most inspiring ‘Dhamma Appreciation Night’ was recently held on 24 May to celebrate the Wesak full-moon Buddha Day. The dynamic performances that evening delighted the audience with its youthful zest and brilliant comedic effects. The night’s 3 performances were specially presented by a team of dedicated young Nalandians, who were ably guided by Nalanda Institute’s Director, Mr. Vijaya Samarawickrama.

Wesak Observance at Nalanda Johor Bahru

Wesak full-moon Buddha Day was celebrated for the first time at NEO Centre Johor Bahru on Saturday, 25 May.  More than 200 devotees packed the Centre to attend the pūja and Dhamma sharing by Nalandians.

Harmonious and Memorable Wesak 2013

The Wesak Programme at Nalanda began with a Lighting of Lamp on Thursday, 23 May. Thence began a series of wholesome and meaningful programmes, including Dhamma talks, Pindacāra (monks going on alms-round), a Mass Taking Refuge Ceremony, and the highlight on Wesak night – the Heritage Procession.

On Wesak full-moon day, millions of Buddhists all over the world gather to pay tribute to the Three Jewels.  As we commemorate the Birth, Enlightenment and Passing Away of the Buddha, we reflect on His teachings with great respect and gratitude.  We renew our determination to learn and practise the Dhamma, with courage and with compassion.

Mass Food Offering & Metta Bhāvanā on Wesak Day

A Mass Food Offering for the public will be held on Wesak Buddha Day, 24 May, from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.  Every year, devotees bring along food to share and serve the public out of generosity and humility.  We rejoice in knowing that many who received food years ago are now offering food to the public in return!  Sharing blessings and working together in harmony, this mass food offering is also a wonderful opportunity to cultivate ourselves spiritually.

Buddha Day Heritage Procession – 24 May, 7pm

The Buddha Day Heritage Procession at Nalanda is a unique cultural and spiritual experience that attracts more than 1,000 participants yearly.  It is the only Heritage Procession in Malaysia where the Buddharupam is conveyed on a wooden sedan to the harmonious beat of drums and gongs, accompanied by beautifully hand-crafted paraphernalia carried by traditionally-dressed devotees holding candle-lights.

Buddha Jayanti Photograph Exhibition, 24–26 May

The Buddha Jayanti Exhibition is one of the highlights of Nalanda’s Wesak Observance.  From handcrafted exhibits to photographs, messages of the Dhamma are illustrated through visual presentations to stimulate reflection from the viewer’s perspective.

True Significance of Wesak

On 11 & 12 May, an introductory course to explain the true significance of Wesak was held at Nalanda Centre in Sri Serdang and NEO @ Happy Garden respectively. Wesak Day commemorates the Birth, Enlightenment and Passing Away of the Buddha. These events took place on the full-moon day in the lunar month of Vesākha. This year, in Malaysia, Wesak Day is observed on 24 May.
