Bāla Vagga (Fools)

Verse 60

Dīghā jāgarato ratti
dīgham santassa yojanam
Dīgho bālānam samsāro
saddhammam avijānatam
Long is the night to the wakeful;
long is the league to the weary;
long is samsāra to the foolish  
who knows not the Sublime Truth.
Meaning

jāgarato (to be) awake

ratti night

santa tired, wearied, exhausted

yojana league (a measurement of distance)

bāla [ Adj. ]   the foolish, ignorant

samsāro the cycle of birth and death

saddhammam the true doctrine, sublime truth

avijānam not knowing, ignorant

 
This stanza is spoken by the Buddha to King Pasenadi of Kosala, pointing out to the king how ignorance keeps one well-bounded to Samsāra.
